SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED
DISEASES/INFECTIOUS PANEL
(STD/STI)

Understanding the differences between STD/STI PCR-based molecular testing and traditional culture methods can help inform appropriate STD/STI testing strategies. PCR testing provides greater sensitivity and faster turnaround times than culture for many sexually transmitted infections, making it a widely used approach for pathogen detection.

PCR testing identifies pathogen-specific genetic material directly from a patient specimen, while culture methods require viable organisms to grow under specific laboratory conditions. Because PCR can detect pathogens even when present at low levels, it may improve detection of infections that are difficult to identify through conventional culture.
